Roots Music Stomp – Old Time/ New TImes: “Where’d You Come From, Where’d You Go?
Join us for the March edition of Roots Music Stomp – featuring Maggie Shar and Brian Slattery of The Moon Shells. For this concert, Maggie and Brian are teaming with roots music maestro Craig Edwards to talk about where the music came from and how we can use our knowledge of it to shape where it’s going.
The Moon Shells (https://www.themoonshells.com/)—Maggie Shar, Brian Slattery, Laura Murawski, Molly Merrett, and Charlie Shaw—draw from the traditional music of Appalachia, Louisiana, West Africa and elsewhere to try to make something new. Whether performing as an acoustic stringband, a stripped-down duo, or a five-piece making modern sounds on traditional instruments at clubs and festivals, the Moon Shells move hearts and feet.
They’ve recorded albums of both original and traditional material- The Hartford Courant included “Seaside Asylum” and “Earth” in its list of best regional albums for 2019 and 2021, respectively. In 2022 they were nominated for Americana Band of the Year for the New England Music Awards. In addition, Maggie and Brian have taught classes about traditional music at numerous schools and camps, including Augusta Heritage Center, Suwanee Banjo Camp, and Banjo Camp North, among many others.
