Memory Lane – RIIFF Screening w/Shorts
The Rhode Island International Film Festival presents a screening of the feature film Memory Lane along with selected short films prior to the feature. The UNITED is thrilled to be a screening location for the Festival which runs throughout various RI venues celebrating independent cinema from August 6-11.
Memory Lane | directed by Jelle de Jonge | Netherlands, 104 min.
An unexpected letter disrupts the monotonous life of elderly couple Maartje and Jaap, forcing them to confront what they have been avoiding for a long time. Jaap is bitter and grumpy, while Maartje is struggling with dementia. Despite Jaap’s initial reluctance, they embark on a road trip to Spain to say goodbye to an old friend who is dying. Along the way, they rediscover each other and acknowledge Maartje’s illness. They encounter a world that has changed significantly since their last visit to Spain, with new technology and hyper-modern surroundings.
The journey shakes Jaap, and he realizes that the Europe he knew only exists in his memory. However, when Maartje finds an old box full of cassette tapes, the music from back then becomes the soundtrack of the film, and Jaap slowly thaws. As their bickering subsides, Jaap becomes softer and more caring towards Maartje, and he starts to enjoy life again. The road trip leads them to confront the unavoidable reality of Maartje’s dementia, and Jaap learns to care for her in a new way.
Shorts: Prior to the feature, two short films will be screened. The first will be Nun or Never directed by Heta Jaalinoja (11 min. | Finland) – A nun digs a man up from the ground and loses her grip on everyday life. Can secrets and harmony coexist? The second will be For Every Breath directed by Erika Arlee (12 min. | United States) – A young girl goes on an illicit scavenger hunt to find medication for her strung out grandmother.
