Tender Mercies (1983) – Movies with Meaning Series

The latest installment of Movies with Meaning will feature a panel discussion with inspiring locals on recovery from alcoholism through faith and community. Moderated by Westerly essayist Peter Laffin (deputy commentary editor, Washington Examiner), with panelists Father Michael Najim (former pastor of St. Pius X in Westerly) and Matthew Gregoire (whose long-term recovery started at Enders Island in Mystic), the 30-minute talk will center on the themes of redemption, faith, family, and the human spirit’s capacity to endure hardship, followed by a screening of the 1983 classic Tender Mercies. The film, nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, stars Robert Duvall as Mac Sledge, a former country music star whose career and relationship with his ex-wife and daughter were wrecked by alcoholism.
