Roots Music Stomp – Mareva Lindo & Jay Desrosiers

Join us for the October edition of Roots Music Stomp – hosted by Craig Edwards and this month featuring traditional fiddlist Mareva Lindo and traditional Irish and Quebecois musician Jay Desrosiers.

Mareva Lindo is a Chicago-made, Providence-based musician and audio documentarian. She plays fiddle, guitar, bass, and sings with a number of bands — from old-time to grunge-pop — and has performed on stages at the Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival, Jalopy Theater, and the University of Chicago Folk Festival. From 2019-2022 Mareva apprenticed under master Illinois fiddler Genevieve Koester to learn traditional fiddle tunes and songs of Illinois, funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency’s Master-Apprentice Program. She’s produced concerts, dances and festivals for years, including co-founding and running the Midwest Sing & Stomp festival 2016-2019.

Jay Desrosiers is a Providence-based mandolin player, dance musician and event organizer. After years of playing traditional Irish and Quebecois music in the northeast, he developed an interest in writing music, and studied composition at Rhode Island College. From 2012-2022 he immersed himself in Chicago’s traditional music and dance community–as a performer and organizer with folk music collective Old Lazarus’ Harp, as a booker for the Chicago Barn Dance Company, and as an organizer of the University of Chicago Folk Festival. From 2017-2019 he co-directed the Midwest Sing & Stomp, a traditional music and dance festival focused on regional traditional artists.

Roots Music Stomp is a monthly series of performances hosted by Craig Edwards, who has been called “A walking encyclopedia of American Roots Music.” Craig sings and plays Appalachian Old Time, Blues, Bluegrass, Cajun, Celtic, Chanteys, Folk, Roots Rock, Swing, Zydeco, and more on fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and button accordion. Each month guest musicians who are experts in one or more of these musical traditions will collaborate with Craig as we explore the rich tapestry of traditional social music that underpins America’s vibrant musical culture.
